Tour of Northfield, Minnesota

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

Today we’re checking out Northfield, Minnesota. An absolute gem about 45 minutes from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. With great schools, a beautiful downtown area, and diverse housing stock - it’s hard to go wrong with Northfield. There will not be a better video of this anywhere on the internet. So stick around!

Northfield Vibes Northfield kind of feels like it was plucked right out of Scandinavia - with beautiful architecture, some of the coolest historic mansions are here in Minnesota. It’s a super cool spot - I get why people want to live here. One thing that draws people here are the colleges - St. Olaf and Carleton College campuses are located in Northfield. They are both beautiful, historic and very good schools. The downtown area is vibrant with a lot of great restaurants, bars, shops, antique stores, coffee shops, parks, and gathering spaces. Home Price Statistics The median list price is $330k and the median sale price is $350k. You can find single family homes here ranging from $150k, all of the way up to $3.5 million. There’s not going to be a ton of homes in that higher priced range - but there are farms, hobby farms, or homes with acreage. And it’s a beautiful enough area that people are willing to build substantial homes here. If you’re looking for a condo/townhome, the range is from about $120k up to about $435k. There’s not going to be that many condos, and for the most part if there are, a lot of them are going to be cool, historic condos.

Pros + Cons

Pros:

  • Great mix of historic, suburban, and rural homes with a quaint, small town feel and a historic downtown

  • Great schools - for a small town it is a nice treat, where sometimes that can be a challenge

  • Amazing outdoor spaces all throughout - parks, trails, bike lanes - outdoor lifestyle friendly

  • Even in the historic home neighborhoods, they have big yards

  • Wide variety of housing stock - early 1900’s historic homes, several decades of suburban development, and also rural homes like a hobby farm with acreage, or a million dollar plus mansion on a golf course

  • Generally affordable housing

Cons:

  • Off the beaten path - fairly removed from the metro. Six miles from 35W and the closest suburbs being Lakeville/Farmington being about 25 minutes north.

  • Maybe lack some of the common convenience

To Sum Up Northfield in Three Points

  • Quiet small town

  • Classic historic downtown with a very special vibe

  • Great suburban level schools
