Updated: Feb 7, 2023

Today we're taking you on a Virtual Tour of Woodbury, MN!

Woodbury is a fantastic suburb located about 15 minutes east/southeast of downtown St. Paul and is the 8th largest city in Minnesota with room to grow. It has good schools, nice outdoor spaces, tons of suburban amenities, and slightly above median home prices. With all its pros, we can see why folks love this one!

Stick around!

Woodbury Vibes

An eastern Twin Cities suburb, Woodbury is pretty conveniently located about 15 minutes from St. Paul, 30 minutes from Minneapolis, and 20 minutes from the MSP airport. The city is home to around 77k residents and is the 8th largest in Minnesota. Woodbury is bordered to the north by I-94 and the cities of Oakdale and Lake Elmo, to the east by Manning Ave and the city of Afton, to the south by the city of Cottage Grove, and to the west by Century Ave and the cities of Newport and Maplewood.

Woodbury has more suburban amenities than just about any city in the Twin Cities metro. With places like Tamarack Village, Woodbury Lakes, and The Shoppes Of Woodbury Village, these areas are absolutely loaded with all the amenities one could need. Although there are endless shops, Woodbury is also home to beautiful neighborhood parks and public outdoor spaces like Tamarack Nature Preserve, Carver Lake Park, and Powers Lake Park to name just a few.

Woodbury has very good schools and is served primarily by 3 school districts: Stillwater Area Public Schools, South Washington County School District, and North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District. According to niche.com, they are rated A-, A-, and B respectively. The South Washington County School District serves the majority of Woodbury, while the Stillwater and North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School Districts serve the northeastern and northwestern portions respectively.

In terms of high schools, all 4 serving the city are rated either an A or A-*. Those 4 schools in ranked order are Woodbury Senior High School, East Ridge High School, Stillwater Area High School, and Tartan Senior High School. There are also 4 middle schools, all rated an A- or B+*. In ranked order they are Lake Middle School, Oak-Land Middle School, Woodbury Middle School, and Skyview Community Middle School. Being a larger city, there are too many elementary schools to list here. But rest assured most are pretty good with the worst rating being a B-*.

Home Price Statistics

The median sale price across all home types in Woodbury comes in around $405k at the time of writing this. However, for single-family homes, $400k is basically the barrier-of-entry. To put context into that, $400k-$450k housing stock in Woodbury is going to be the late 80's/early 90's variety that is untouched and dated with original mechanicals and kitchens, etc. Prices of single-family homes currently on the market range from around $306k and upwards of $1.7m. For condos and townhomes currently on the market, prices range from as low as $160k and go up to around $788k. Approximately 80% of residents in Woodbury own their homes.

Pros + Cons

  • Nice outdoor spaces

  • Neighborhoods with sidewalks with access to park spaces

  • Endless suburban amenities and even some 'higher-end' stores

  • Big homes and decent side yards

  • Quiet streets, peaceful suburban neighborhoods

Cons

  • Ultra-suburb - maybe a bit cookie-cutter and slightly bland

  • Expensive homes - home prices above the TWC median (but with all the pros, the value is worth it)

  • Not walkable - nice walks in your neighborhood sure, but it's car dependent for sure for errands

  • Often homes with older infrastructure and dated aesthetics

  • Amenities are cookie cutter in a classically suburban way
